I am about seventy eight years old. I recollect that when I was about three years old living with my Father and Mother at their house in Saint Breock Churchtown in the Parish of Saint Breock in the County of Cornwall it is as long back as I can recollect anything and we continued to live there until I was thirty five years old. My Father’s name was Charles and my Mother’s name was Elizabeth. About fifty five years ago my Father Charles Saunders rented an Estate called Hay situate in the said Parish of Saint Breock in the said County of Cornwall of Messeurs Charles Rashleigh and Edward Coode consisting of a separate and distinct Dwelling house and about thirty nine acres of land and above the yearly value of ten pounds under a certain Indenture bearing date the twenty ninth day of September one thousand seven hundred and ninety two and made between the said Charles Rashleigh and Edward Coode of the one part and the said Charles Saunders of the other part whereby the said Charles Rashleigh and Edward Coode granted demise and ferm let to the said Charles Saunders All that Messuage and Tenement on a commonly called or known by the name of Hay situate lying and being in the Parish of Saint Breock in the said County of Cornwall for the term of forty years is the Interest of the said Charles Rashleigh and Edward Coode therein should a long continue at the yearly rent of twenty Three Pounds seven shillings and sixpence which said Indenture I now produce marked ‘A’ My said Father occupied the said Estate of Hay several years and during the whole time he held it and resided and slept at Saint Breock Church Town in the said Parish of Saint Breock . He also at the same time rented a tenement situate in the said Parish of Saint Breock called Trenage consisting of a separate and distinct Dwelling house and about seventeen acres of land of a Mr Dillon at the yearly rent of twenty two pounds and occupied it several years. I was living with him as part of his family when he took the said tenements to rent and continued to reside with him for several years afterwards. When I was about thirty five years old that is to say at Michaelmas one thousand eight hundred and four my Father gave up the estate called Hay to me consisting of a separate and distinct Dwelling house and about thirty nine acres of land situate in the said Parish of Saint Breock in the said County of Cornwall of the annual value of ten pounds and upwards for the remainder a of term for which he took the same of the said Charles Rashleigh and Edward Coode accordingly entered on the said Estate called Hay at Michaelmas one thousand eight hundred and four aforesaid and occupied the same thenceforth until Michaelmas one thousand eight hundred and fourteen. I paid the said rent of twenty three pounds seven shillings and sixpence to the said Charles Rashleigh and Edward Coode every year of my Tenancy till the last about Ladyday in which year the life died and I paid the rent then due to the said Charles Rashleigh and Edward Coode and what accrued from that time to the Michaelmas following to the late Mr. Lakeman as the Steward of the late Sir Arscott Molesworth . During the whole time I occupied the said Estate called Hay I resided and slept in the said Parish of Saint Breock in the Dwelling house at Hay aforesaid except when in some particular occasions I was from home for a few days. I was also charged to the Public Taxes and Levies of the said Parish of Saint Breock namely the Poor Rate and Church Rate in respect of the said tenement called Hay during the greater part of the time I occupied the same and I paid all the said Taxes and Levies so charged on me. I have since done no act to gain a Settlement I became chargeable to the said Parish of Saint Breock before Poor Law Unions were formed and have pay regularly ever since. I have been living in the said Parish of Saint Issey about three years. I was relieved by the said Parish of Saint Breock whilst living in the said Parish of Saint Issey upwards of two years part of the time with the weekly relief of one shilling and one loaf and the remainder thereof with the weekly relief of one shilling and six pence and one loaf. They stopped my pay several months since. I believe it was in April last I have since that time received the weekly relief of one shilling and six pence and a loaf two shillings and a loaf and two shillings and six pence from the said Parish of Saint Issey and I am now actually chargeable to the said Parish of Saint Issey and received the weekly relief of two shillings and six pence on Friday last for the present week. The said relief was granted to me in consequence of my being poor and destitute and unable to support myself.
